Protecting Ohio’s Middle Class
After a long and hard recession, Ohio’s economy is finally taking steps toward recovery. The recession has hurt everyone, but we have pulled together and we are starting to turn the corner.
The last thing Ohio needs now is a constitutional amendment designed to lower wages and reduce benefits for every Ohio worker.
Amazingly, though, that’s just what a group of out-of-state special interests is trying to impose on Ohio, even after that same measure has hurt economies in every other state in which its been tried.
Those special interests are coming to Ohio to try and pass their “Workplace Freedom Amendment.”
DON’T BE FOOLED.
“Workplace Freedom” has nothing to do with freedom in the workplace. It is simply an attempt to decrease middle class income and benefits, to increase profits for a few wealthy owners.
With their “Workplace Freedom Amendment,” they are the only ones who gain; the rest of Ohio loses.
Here are the facts:
- States where similar measures have passed have the highest unemployment rates in the country.
- These laws have been proven to drive wages down, on average 14%, which damages the overall economy.
- Most studies conclude that these laws have no positive impact on economic development, and some studies even conclude that they may hurt economic progress.
- This isn’t about union membership. These laws have been proven to decrease wages for all workers, just like they are intended to do.
Think this is one more Republicans vs. Democrats battle? Think again. Governor John Kasich has said that when he talks to CEOs around the state about Ohio’s business climate, “labor unrest rarely comes up” and that Ohio doesn’t need this law.
State leaders know that “Workplace Freedom” is a fraud. It doesn’t mean freedom for workers; it means lower wages, fewer benefits, and worse working conditions. Ohio’s economy can’t afford this. We need more jobs, better wages, and a stronger economy for everyone.
They’re trying to pull the wool over your eyes by calling their measure “Workplace Freedom.” Now is the time to stand up for Ohio’s workers. Get informed and spread the word! The better prepared we are now, the easier it will be to defeat this destructive, unnecessary measure.
